Disney Pixar has released a range of images and concept art for cancelled production Newt on its Facebook page, teasing fans over what could have been.

Announced in 2008, the film was supposed to hit cinemas in 2012, but earlier this year sources said that it had been taken of the studio‘s production schedule to make room for the likes of Cars 2.

The film was supposed to tell the story of the last two blue-footed newts, destined to mate in order to save the species.

After some confusion, including Disney/Pixar‘s animation head John Lasseter declining to comment on the film‘s status, the future of the movie was set straight after images of the production were uploaded to Pixar‘s Facebook page last Friday.

The images were accompanied by the caption: “As most of you already know, “Newt“ is no longer in development at Pixar. However, that doesn‘t mean we can‘t share some of the Pixar artists‘ amazing artwork with our Facebook fans!”

Take a look at the page to see what could have been if Pixar made Newt.

Nick Campbell over at Greyscalegorilla has been working hard extending his new product HDRI Light Kit Pro. His latest version is the Daylight Rig, which looks really exciting.

I have tryed the HDRI Light Kit Pro my self and found it to be very usefull when lighting scenes, so i must say i am looking forward to testing out the new light rig...

Scenes Lit With Daylight

"Nick Campbell"

This rig quickly simulates daylight lighting with sun and sky and renders very realistic shadows and highlights with and without Global Illumination. It renders super fast and is a great way to instantly light any scene. I have been using it a TON lately and I can’t wait for you guys to try it when the new version of the HDRI Light Kit Pro comes out. This will be a free update for existing users which means that anybody that buys the kit before the new version comes out will get the update FREE in their email inbox. There are also a few more goodies in store with the new version including new studio presets and HDRI Images. Getting really excited for this one.

LOS ANGELES, Calif., August 29th, 2010 – ZBrushWorkshops is proud to announce the release of the most comprehensive ZBrush 4 training on the planet.

The Introduction to ZBrush 4 contains over 15 hours of video and almost 1 GB of resource files. It contains 71 different chapters that delve into the inner workings of ZBrush known only to those inside the development team at Pixologic. New ZBrush 4 topics such as Spotlight, Best Preview Render, Shadowbox and the new clip brushes are covered as well as how to use Timeline to animate your presentations.

ZBrushWorkshops‘ mission is to combine traditional artistic teaching with digital workflows and train sculptors for jobs in the film and game industry. In founding ZBW, Ryan brought his considerable experience both at Pixologic and at the Gnomon Workshop to develop a robust yet friendly environment for artists to learn, create and grow. All workshops at ZBrushWorkshops include email support and chat so artists are never alone with their problems.

Here is what other people are saying about us:

“There is no ZBrush artist working today who has not benefited from the educational materials and techniques of Ryan Kingslien. Since his time as director of training for Pixologic Ryan has taught ZBrush with a depth of understanding about the program that is unmatched. His style is never simply a technical guide, Ryan will take you much further and deeper into understanding how the program works as well as how to use the program to create beautiful art. Ryan has created an educational community I am excited to take part in myself. This may well be the first digital sculpting atelier!“ – Scott Spencer, Author and Sculptor at Weta Workshops.

“Ryan was an important part of the success of ZBrush 3. His blend of a traditional artistic background and technical prowess was key in helping us shape the next generation of digital sculpting software.“ – Jaime Labelle, COO of Pixologic.

“Ryan‘s involvement with the development of ZBrush coupled with his deep understanding of anatomy and traditional sculptural techniques make him the ideal teacher of the emerging art of digital sculpting. I am immediately amazed and impressed with the quality and extent of the video tutorials on ZBrushWorkshops, I know I will be spending a lot of time here!” – Eric Keller, Author of Introduction to ZBrush.

And here is the result, which I think looks rather cool, the inspiration came from a good friends telephone which is basically the bat phone from the old batman series.

Anyway I decided to give mine more of a vintage looks for the render. It was modeled in Cinema 4D release 11 and the textures were made in Photoshop. The second rendered image I made a few tweaks to the colour adjustments in Photoshop.

This detailed Cinema 4D model will be available to purchase for a very reasonable price quite soon!

Realtime Worlds games firm collapse costs 185 jobs

Realtime was seen as one of the biggest players in the UK games market
A total of 185 people have been laid off after the collapse of video games firm Realtime Worlds, administrators have confirmed.

It comes as a Dundee MP called on the UK government to "look again" at tax breaks for the computer games industry.

The company, founded by the creator of Lemmings and Grand Theft Auto, went into administration on Monday.

In Dundee, 157 of the company's 210 staff have lost their jobs, along with 28 of the firm's US staff in Colorado.

The SNP MP for Dundee East, Stewart Hosie, said he was saddened by the news of Realtime's demise.

A tax break for the industry was cancelled by the UK government in June. The Scotland Office said the measure had only ever been a proposal by the previous Labour government.

Administrators Begbies Traynor have said they are hopeful of selling the firm as a going concern after interest from would-be buyers on both sides of the Atlantic.

"We are actively pursuing all these expressions of interest which have come from both the UK and US," joint administrator Paul Dounis said.

Realtime, which made 60 staff redundant last week, was viewed as one of the biggest players in the UK computer games market.

Mr Hosie said: "If we're growing a vibrant computer games sector we need to look at what competitor countries are doing.

"If they're offering tax breaks to encourage development to happen in those countries then we need to look again to do the same thing here."

He added: "This is a sad day for Dundee, to see our biggest computer games company go into administration.

"I will be making the strongest representations to the UK government to support Scotland's video games industry which is so important to Dundee."

“Start Quote"

Despite today's terrible news, Dundee and Scotland remain good places to do games business”
End Quote Dr Richard Wilson Tiga

The SNP said the party's local MPs and MSPs would be meeting Realtime management and administrators Begbies Traynor later.

And Labour MPs in Scotland have criticised the UK government for "pulling the rug" from under the feet of the games industry.

Jim McGovern, Labour MP for Dundee West, said: "The Scottish secretary cannot afford to stand idly by. He must urgently meet with Realtime so he can see for himself just how important it is to support the computer games industry."

A Scotland Office spokesman said: "The administrator has said the company's difficulties appear to be the result of commercial market forces.

"The tax break for the industry outlined by the previous administration was only a proposal and one which was never enacted. It is misleading to talk of any tax relief having been scrapped for the games industry."

Bafta-winning Realtime Worlds, founded in 2002 by creative director Dave Jones, had just released its newest title, online role-playing game APB.

But the administrators said there had been "lacklustre" demand for the product.

Dr Richard Wilson, from the UK's video game trade association Tiga, said Realtime Worlds was a "fantastic company with an exceptionally talented team".

"Despite today's terrible news, Dundee and Scotland remain good places to do games business," he said.

"Scotland has some excellent universities and offers large numbers of extremely talented programmers, artists, producers, managers, designers, audio engineers and testers."

Realtime has its main development operations in Dundee and its parent company head office and online operations are in Colorado, which employed 42 people.
